"Former NZ Tennis Line Umpire found dead in Rome"

A former WTUA and NZTUA member has died in a tragic partying accident in Rome

Jason Scorer, formally of Blenheim, line officiated at several Blenheim and a Wellington ITF Futures until moving to Queensland, Australia with his family in 2005.

An able line umpire, his small  stature and youthful looks could attract unjustified attention from, usually, loosing players. On one occasion at a Blenheim futures after making a good close 'out' call, the player who had just lost the point shouted, "Oh my God, they have children calling lines here!"  Of course as with all good line umpires, Jason was not fazed by the outburst and calmly continued what he was on court to do.

Jason was also an able tennis player and member of the Marlborough Tennis Club. He had also represented NZ in Olympic Tae Kwon Do.

Jason aged 20, was found in the Tiber River on Wednesday night after apparently falling from a 12 metre-high wall according to Italian police.

It is understood that Jason was travelling through Europe with another Queensland man.

I'm sure that all tennis officials who knew Jason will be greatly sadden by his death.  Jason is survived by an older brother and younger sister.
